The Killers Release Powerful New Song "Land of the Free"

On Monday (January 14), The Killers released a powerful new single with an equally powerful visual counterpart.

"Land of the Free" sees frontman Brandon Flowers writing some of his most politically charged lyrics to date, as he questions America's mass incarceration (“We got more people locked up than the rest of the world/ Right here in red, white, and blue/ Incarcerations become big business,”); condemns gun control (“So how many daughters?/ Tell me how many sons/ Do we have to put in the ground/ Before we just break down and face it?/ We’ve got a problem with guns,”) and scoffs at President Trump's proposed border wall (And down at the border/ They’re gonna put up a wall/ Concrete and rebar steel beams/ High enough to keep all those filthy hands off/ Of our hopes and our dreams/ People who just want the same things we do/ In the land of the free"). As such, it's fitting that the band hired director Spike Lee to create the song's video, which he filmed at the Mexican border late last year. The clip documents migrant families getting tear-gassed by U.S. border patrol during an incident in November.

Along with the song reveal, Flowers shared a thoughtful post about its conception on Instagram.

"Land of the Free" is the first new music from The Killers since they released Wonderful Wonderful in 2017. Could this be the first single off a new album? We sure hope so.
